On August 19, invited by Dr. Qin Fang, Dr. Z. H. Zhou, Director of Electron Imaging Center for NanoMachines (EICN) and Professor of Microbiology, Immunology & Molecular Genetics, UCLA, visited Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV).
Dr. Zhou gave a wonderful talk entitled “Atomic Resolution Virus Structures by CryoEM” and then had an active discussion with faculties and students. After the talk, Dr.zhou visited Key Laboratory of Virology and core facility center, and exchanged interest with related scientists.

Dr. Zhou and Dr. Fang carried out their cooperation in the area of 3D reconstruction by cryo-electronmicroscopy (cryo-EM) utilizing Aquareovirus (Grass Carp reovirus, GCRV) as a model since 2004. The resolution of GCRV 3D Image has been improved from 17Å to 3.3 Å. Significantly, latest work published in Cell has revealed the potential mechanism on how GCRV entry into host cells, which provides invaluable information not only for further molecular pathogenesis study of non-enveloped dsRNA viruses but also searching for anti-virus drugs. In all, many great outcomes will be achieved by combining molecular virology and structural biology through this collaboration.
