The 8th International Workshop on Biosafety Laboratory
Management and Techniques

October 27th to November 10th, 2024

Wuhan, China


 

Background

Supported by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, the International Workshop on Biosafety Laboratory Management and Techniques is organized by the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and has been held annually since 2017. Over 600 participants from 43 countries have attended the workshop. The workshop aims to enhance biosafety capacity and promote international cooperation in the prevention and control of infectious diseases. The next workshop will be held from October 27th to November 10th, 2024 in Wuhan, China.

The workshop is designed for laboratory managers, directors, and research and laboratory staff from developing countries who are involved in or planning to conduct infectious disease research in biosafety facilities. It will offer both theoretical and practical training on biosafety laboratory management and techniques.

Objectives

  • Discuss the current status of international biosafety
  • Understand the key components (risk recognition, risk assessment, and risk mitigation) of the biorisk management system for biosafety laboratories

  • Acquire knowledge of contagious pathogens and gain hands-on experience in safe operations in biosafety laboratories

  • Know the basic design and operations of biosafety laboratories

Application Requirements

  • Laboratory managers, directors, researchers, or laboratory staff working in biosafety facilities from developing countries

  • Minimum of five years of experience in research or management in biosafety; candidates with doctorate degrees are preferred

  • Proficient in English

  • Below 45 years of age, and in good physical and mental health

  • Full attendance in the workshop during the stay
  • Compliance with the laws and regulations of China during the stay

 

Notice

  • The deadline for submitting your application is August 16th, 2024. After the deadline, you will be informed about the admission decision via email.

  • You will need to submit the following documents with your application

  1. The attached application form

  2. An application letter (personal statement)

  3. Your CV

  4. Academic certificates from your higher education background

  5. A copy of your passport's identity page

  6. A health certificate or medical examination form issued by a public hospital in your country (this can be provided after you have been selected for the workshop)

  • Please also mention in your application the channel through which you were invited or recommended to this workshop.

  • After completing the training, participants will receive a certificate of attendance.

 

Expenses Arrangements

  • Expenses covered by the organizer:

  1. Local meals, accommodations, and transportation

  2. Training fees and cost of materials

  3. WIV will subsidize a certain amount of international travel expenses for the participants. The exact amounts will be informed to the participants after the deadline.

 

  • Expenses to be assumed by participants:
  1. Remaining travel expenses not covered by the subsidy
  2. China visa fees, medical examination fees, post services, phone calls, internet services, and any individual expenditure beyond those arranged by the organizer
